Led through the inspiration of God, Reverend Chester A. Doby, his wife, and several others, organized Trueway Baptist Church in September 1949. It was the desire of Reverend Doby to tell people the truth about our Lord and Savior, so that they would accept Jesus Christ in their lives. Reverend Doby served as Trueway’s Pastor until this death in 1952.
Although the death of Reverend Doby left a void for the members of Trueway, they continued in their faith and kept trusting in God during this difficult time. In 1954, God heard the members’ prayers and answered, blessing them with Trueway’s second Pastor, Amos Watkins.
During his tenure as Pastor, Reverend Watkins canvassed the neighborhood and asked members that had previously left the church to return. The church grew under his leadership. In 1957, Trueway moved to its first home on 9th and M streets, Northeast, Washington, DC. In 1959, due to health related issues, Reverend Watkins resigned his position as Pastor of Trueway Baptist Church; however he remained a valuable asset to Trueway until his death on February 28, 1997.
After Pastor Watkins, Reverend Willie L. Harrison became the third Pastor of Trueway Baptist Church. During his tenure, the church’s committees, including the Deacon Board increased. Reverend Harrison served as pastor until his death in 1968.
A year later, in 1969, Reverend Eddie Koger became Trueway’s fourth pastor. Trueway once again experienced growth and the church moved from its 9th and M street, NE location to its present location of 2417 Naylor Road in SE in 1970. God blessed the membership to burn the mortgage on March 31, 1985.
In January 1987, the fifth pastor, D. Frank Waiters, was installed at Trueway Baptist Church. During his years as Pastor, the Deacon Board was re-organized, and several deacons and other members were called into the ministry and there were several outreach ministries established to serve the need of the community.
In February of 2002, Trueway Baptist Church became Trueway "Help Me Holy Ghost" Baptist Church. In 2005, Pastor Waiters declared that he would be taking sabbatical leave.
During this time Pastor Rodney L. Davis, Sr. found the church in a state of distress and began stopping by every time the opportunity permitted. The Lord began dealing with Pastor Davis and in July 2006 Pastor Davis followed the instructions of the Lord and confronted his current congregation at Unity Temple Baptist Church (UTBC) with what the Lord instructed him to do. The disciples of UTBC followed their Pastor as he stood steadfast on what he was told.
In October 2006, Pastor Davis was elected as Trueway’s sixth Pastor. Pastor Davis accepted Christ at an early age and he is not stranger to Trueway. After being a faithful member for several years at Trueway, Pastor Waiters appointed him to serve as Deacon-In-Training in 1988. A year later, Rev. Davis was ordained as a Deacon at Trueway Baptist Church.
Pastor Davis was called into the ministry on September 24, 1992 and preached his initial sermon the second Saturday in December 1992. His text came from St. Matthew 16:18-21 & 25 and his subject was "Whom Do You Know Jesus To Be."
Pastor Davis earned degrees in Divinity from Washington Bible College and Wilbur Waters School of Religion and Theological Seminary.
In March 1997, Pastor Davis officially joined the Ministerial Staff of Corinthian Baptist Church under the esteemed late Pastor Rev. Cassell Ward. In October 1997, he was called to Youth Pastor at New Chapel Baptist Church in Camp Springs, Maryland under the esteemed leadership of Pastor William Hill. At New Chapel, Pastor Davis served as the Youth Council President, Overseer of the Prison Ministry, and Vice-President of the Conference Ministry.
Pastor Davis is a fire ball preacher who can preach, will preach, and he doesn’t mind preaching. His favorite scripture is Joshua 24:15 that reads, "As for me and my house we will serve the Lord." He is an Ambassador for Christ who is known as "the motivator."
Pastor Davis is a powerful man of God, but he is not alone in his spiritual journey. He walks his path with a powerful woman of God by his side, Pastorette Lynette D. Davis. Pastor Davis will proudly proclaim from the pulpit, that Pastorette is the bone of his bone, flesh of his flesh and his favorite cheerleader in the ministry. God ordained their union and they are the proud parents of two children, Manicia and Rodney, Jr. In 2003, they founded their own church and appropriately named it Unity Temple Baptist Church. Although small in number, UTBC strived in its first three years with faithful disciples who have a deep love and faithfulness for God and who respect Pastor Davis as their spiritual leader.
At the end of October 2006, Trueway Baptist Church and Unity Temple Baptist Church officially merged as one church and the members voted to change its name to True Unity Baptist Church.
Pastor Davis has put together an Administration Staff to help balance out the various tasks that the two churches had in place. This Administrative staff consists of Co-Pastor - Pastorette Lynette D. Davis, Pastor’s Secretary – Tiane Johnson, Church Clerk – Gwendolyn House, and Ministry Administrator - Diane Johnson-Arrington. He has also embarked upon a building fund project, added a Security Ministry, Praise Team and Jr. Trustees. He has revamped the church structure and Appointed Pastorette Lynette Davis as the Co-Pastor of this union. Pastor Davis has a vision to take the members of True Unity to higher levels in their relationship with God, and he hopes to empower spiritual growth in the community of its current location in SE. In 2007, Pastor Davis told his members this is the year of release and to "raise their level of expectation in all things." Therefore as we celebrate Pastor’s Anniversary, the Church Merge and Installation, it is claimed in the name of Jesus that Pastor Davis is ready to take True Unity Baptist Church to even greater heights of success.
